Break it down

It's been a very funny thing reconnecting with so many old friends on Facebook this past week. It's actually kind of been like a North Park class reunion as for some reason... everyone seems to have discovered Facebook at the same time and is totally enthralled with it.

It's been funny to me to see what and where everyone is. Let's comparison shop:

MANY: 0/1/ Maybe 2 kids
DAVE: Seems to be reproducing like it's going out of style

MANY: Newlyweds... isn't that cute... ahhh...
DAVE: Got married while in college, when wife's part time job at Zellers was only income! 9 years this summer!

MANY: Living all over the province/country/world
DAVE: Living in Brantford... proudly I might add

MANY: Politically Liberal/ very Liberal/Having inappropriate relations with plant life
DAVE: Has a dreamy poster of Steven Harper up in my bedroom

MANY: Read
DAVE: Write

MANY: Have important jobs in corporations or are still in school
DAVE: Does funny voices

MANY: Religion isn't a factor in life (some even used derogatory words about it...) GASP, the nerve (sarcasm)
DAVE: Accepted Christ in Grade... ummm... 14 (school didn't mean much at the time eh) and went hard.

I don't know if you've had this same experience when you reconnect with old friends. But I've felt very happy about who I've become. Not in the insulting, "pft... at least I didn't turn out like that guy" way. But I can honestly look and be very secure in knowing that I've been true to myself. And most of my friends are too.

I can most assuredly say that I've lived what I believed to be "The Truth" in every season to it's fullest extent, and who I am today is a result of those actions. Actions should be intentional... but where they lead you isn't always as understood. Life is funky, but circumstance too often dictates action.

Proverbs 4:5
Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them.

Know the truth... and there will be freedom there. At that point, actions during circumstance will be intentional and your destination will sit well in your soul.

I know Vamonos means "Let's Go" in Spanish.
I know ALL about Chincillas.
I'm wary of stray foxes because they might steal a baby bird's bananas.
I'm confused about how Diego and Dora and Alicia are related because Dora's "Mommy" and "Poppy" have far exceeded their child rearing years.
I'm a parent of young children.
I am a part of an exclusive private club that "The others" don't understand

You will know if you are in this club if you watch this and experience urine streaming down your leg from excessive laugher

Blue Jays Preview... sort of... in my own way

I'm a guest blogger today on "Rays Index". It's a cool Tampa Bay D-Rays website that I wrote a Jays preview for. Pretty funny if do say so myself.
If I were drinking milk, it would be coming out of my nose. Click the logo and check it out.

Web 2.0... Community?

Wow... in a half a day playing with Facebook, I found about 20 old friends from high school. About 3 or 4 I used to dig graves with (no really), and have near more "friends" than I did in great failed "MySpace" experiment. It's truly fascinating to me, and vividly displays the new concept of Web 2.0

I had this MSN conversation about this concept with my brother this morning...

Rick says: it is really weird isn't it

Dave at Work says: like people i haven't spoken to since 1996 people are all over the world.

Dave at Work says: so interesting

Rick says: it really is

Dave at Work says:
this is what they're calling internet 2.0 (where instead of the internet being a huge thing with unlimited resource... people are using it to connect with the smaller world... creating community)

Rick says: i had not heard that reference before - kinda cool it is

Dave at Work says:
oh really... i'm just hearing about it now... but with things like facebook... youtube... people are using it to keep their world smaller instead of larger it's like poeple have dictated a new direction for a tool that they thought would be for something different in the desire for community

Dave at Work says:
but the internet is a community with a certain disconnect that can (without actual relationship) can leave a very important part of a spirit untouched

I really do think it's amazing what can be done with the Web 2.0 concept. I found out one of my favorite friends from high school is a reporter at CFRB! Amazing!

But, just as with television... there IS a safe disconnect in the deceptive web world. It's stunning our new ability to be able to grow community with people that are at a physical distance... but it can also be a false front.

Web 2.0 can be addictive, and to some... consuming. It can seem that we are building relationship but without accountability, emotional connect, and genuine give and take... it can be incomplete.

Our lives were not created to master technology. Life was birthed to make an impact the world around us for GOOD. We are asked to function together as a body. A house of living stones. We really are responsible and accountable for each other in more ways than we realize and no technology will ever be able to take the place of genuine human touch... because God choose to use US to show HIS intense love for this earth and everything in it.

What are your experiences in the Web 2.0 world?

It's such an ever changing world this so called inter-net.

I'm now on facebook... likely just in time for it to become obsolete.

So go to facebook and search for Dave Carrol. I'll be there... looking like this...

Facebook is exciting to me because now it's a whole brand new technology that we can use to become less actually socially interactive hermits with half hearted text based relationships, leaving us functionally inept.

The possibilities are endless really.

I think I love you...

... so what am I so afraid of?
I'm afraid that I'm not sure of
A love there is no cure for

My brother and I were debating the other day about who the most dominant athlete in Toronto is. And as much as I love Roy Halliday... It's all CB4 these days.

He's good. Kind looks like ET. But reeeeeal good.

Your Name

Can't get the song "Your Name" by Paul Baloche out of my head.

Don't think I want it to go either...

His words:

"As morning dawns and evening fades You inspire songs of praise
That rise from earth to touch Your heart and glorify Your Name

Your Name is a strong and mighty tower
Your Name is a shelter like no other Your Name, let the nations sing it louder 'Cause nothing has the power to save But Your Name"

My cry:

Sometimes people fail you.
Sometimes you fail yourself.
Sometimes you are what you don't want to be.

All the time, YOUR NAME is home.
All the time, YOUR NAME anchors me, allowing me to soar.
All the time, YOUR NAME is why I move.

Weird uncomfortable bizarre nonsense

Good gosh I'm a humor blogger. Heaven's to Murgatroyd even.

So much pressure to tell jokes now. I'm sweating like Raj Binder over here.

On the way to work I picked up a hitchhiking monkey and suckled him back to health. I'm now his mother. We're in a darts league on Wednesdays. He's good.

Ghanaian Baseball

This just is awesome! My heart is pumping. In 2000, my wife and I were in Accra Ghana for 7 months. One of things I did was set up a baseball league that finds kids in poorer areas of the city and runs baseball camps for them. The camps include, job skill training, AIDS training, mentoring, as well as being a full baseball camp.

My friend Albert who is now the VP of Baseball in Ghana, just emailed me a scan of the newspaper article about the opening day of our league, a couple of days before we left 7 seven years ago... you'll have to click it to read it closely... I love it... they call me "Mr. Dave"

NOTE: I'm the white guy in the picture

In the coming months, I'm going to be making some connections here in Canada and the States with people who would be interested in helping to make this amazing league a long-term missionary viability.

One of the reason's I love this baseball league, is that it both builds on people's FELT NEEDS (job skills, career confidence, sports skills)

and also meets the MOST IMPORTANT NEED (an understanding about God... the well that never runs dry)

One of the major needs that Ghana has (in many respects) is to have the Western World partner with their passion... not come and stifle what they've been blessed with...

And recently Major League Baseball has come and made an investment of time and money in Baseball in Ghana.

It was such an encouragement to those on the ground... I can't even tell you. Our league has plans to put full time coaches in 7 cities, building relationships and investing in kids around the country. Let me know if you'd like to know more!

What I'd like in the budget

Today is Minority Government budget day in Canada. Huzzah! Do you have your giant Jim Flaherty is #1 foam finger ready?

It's a day where our country's leadership determines what our priorities are.

I love this country. One thing I love about it is that our politicians are not the most famous people in the world. There are very few Stephen Harper impressions on SNL. Basically... we're Canadian... where our nerds know their place!

Now I will make my statement about MY priorities for the country...

1. More "How to speak Canadian" instructional audio files. I love Arthur the confused rat with all my heart. He makes me feel more like a hoser.

2. I think Canadians should also be forced to reproduce more. I'd like especially those in rural areas to really get down to business so that we get that birth rate up! My goal is to make the Canadian Shield fully populated by the end of my term. So let's get inter-coursing OK? Would it help if I hummed Barry White music?

3. I want to see Canada become more square. Not dorky square. But actually physically square. We are far too round. More rigid distinct lines and 90 degree angles will help things. I believe it was the prophet Huey Lewis who once said...

I know that its crazy
I know that its nowhere
But there is no denying that
Its hip to be square

Truer words have never been spoken.

4. I think we should budget for a crisis of some kind in 2009. Not 2008... it's too soon. 2009 would be perfect though. I'm looking forward to using my dented cans of corn as rations. Maybe we could arrange a crazy knife fight over that corn. Make it so.

5. Finally, I think Canada could use an official dance. We need something that represents our country's dignity, acceptance of all peoples, and also exposes our nipples to each other. I'm thinking something in a Rave/Polka/Slam Dance would be nice. So every morning we do this dance with our families. Real unity builder.

Any thoughts on what you'd like to see in the budget? The suggestion box is open.

Pool Day

Check out my latest column on Bluebird Banter.

Today is the day where my friends hang out at my house and mythically draft highly paid professional athletes on to imaginary teams for likely 10 hours...

One of the best days of the year

God speaks in the Morning

My 5:30am priestly drawing close to the King's soundtrack was...

The script was...

Acts 4: 13-14 They couldn't take their eyes off them—Peter and John standing there so confident, so sure of themselves! Their fascination deepened when they realized these two were laymen with no training in Scripture or formal education. They recognized them as companions of Jesus, but with the man right before them, seeing him standing there so upright—so healed!—what could they say against that?

The wisdom and revelation was...

"I've made you an ordinary unschooled man... for MY purposes...embrace obscurity"

Get Wisdom

Over at the Blog for Revolution, the young adult ministry that I lead at Freedom House in Brantford, this morning I posted a bit of an online tutorial about using Biblegateway.com and some other tools and methods of digging into the scripture in the internet age. Check it out...

This has been my favorite scripture lately...

Proverbs 4:5 Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them

I love it, because it is such a solution to a plethora of issues that plague many a weary Christian.

How do I hear God?
What I am supposed to do with my life?
Where should I turn next?

God's answer??? Just Get Wisdom

Does God ever talk smack to you? He does to me. Often when I finally break down and ask him for wisdom about things that I've waste valuable hours thinking about... he'll lay me out pretty good.

It's so obvious. How do we miss it... and continue to miss it???

James 1 5-8 (The Message)

If you don't know what you're doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help. You'll get his help, and won't be condescended to when you ask for it. Ask boldly, believing, without a second thought. People who "worry their prayers" are like wind-whipped waves. Don't think you're going to get anything from the Master that way, adrift at sea, keeping all your options open.

Bits and Pieces

I'm becoming addicted to these sites:

Atom Smasher & Church Sign Generator

I generally DO like Focus on the Family most of the time... but why in the name of Grandma Moses is he so mad at trees?

Check out the right hand side of the blog for a Google Video 60 minute stand up routine from Brian Regan. This guy is maybe the funniest clean comedian around these days! I Love him like a giraffe loves toys.

I'm found a couple of cool new Blog's to visit.... as the virtual universe of worldwide pseudo acquaintances grows... BTW... Blog's are cool, because you don't alway agree with what's written, it's amazing for hearing unique perspectives and analyzing what you really believe...

Check out Smart Pastor here: a cool blog that gives differing lines of thought and keeps up to date on what's going on in Christendom.

This dude here is the "Naked Pastor"... filled with full front emotional nudity of a guy who is really baring his mind online. Challenging thoughts and opinions... some that I agree with and some I don't... but is alway fascinating

Church Marketing Sucks... is quite awesome. I love marketing (I do it for a living) ... and we're so far behind the times, that it makes me gag like smelling a fart... offended by that brother? That would make a good ad. Check this site!

You've gotta see Kinda Kitschy... it's filled with bizarro Christians products, that frankly, on Christ's Marketplace Clean-sweep, He likely would have... oh now how does the King James put it? ABHORD!

I love "The Church". God loved it so much that He gave his kid as a sacrifice... so that it could BE FREE! So much of the silliness that we get caught up in is such a waste of time and effort. It's far beyond time to both analytically and prophetically look inside our walls and give some our stale traditions... lifeless lifestyles... and misuses of energy the ole' heave ho.

Get Free... Live free... Free others.

You smell super Madame

Not exactly a great start to the day when you're out of this...

...So instead you use this!

"Jeepers sir, that's a rugged classically male odor you're emitting today!"

It should be like an Axe Effect commercial around me today, because as we all know... ladies go crazy for a dude who smells like baby powder.

Red thoughts

Found a very interesting post from Hannah... a cool blogger in Vancouver....

"So I was pointed to a new website...

and i love it!

You know all the product(red) stuff that a collaboration of celebrities are a part of, and other company's like The Gap & Apple? Well I always thought it was a good idea in essence, but when it came down to it, jacking up the price 30% and then only giving 10% to the cause seemed a little too much like a marketing scheme.
Then I found this....

The website is buylesscrap.com. I'm personally a fan of the Red Concept. But it IS a second best solution. It's a way to make our selfish society become involved in the world around them... possibly without really caring...but Hannah's right...

Simply giving is what God rewards... because it's sacrifice.

Remember a few weeks ago when we had the big Millionaire for Life Lottery? I was chatting with my brother saying, "Man if somehow I won this, I could buy a new church building, start a business, facilitate other Christians to start business's and that money could become such a blessing... then the next Million would come the next month!"

He said to me... "no it wouldn't... not to you at least... because it wouldn't be a sacrifice for you."

Mark 12: The Widow's Offering
41Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.

43Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on."

Doin' it Bible Style...

Found a great story on www.churchmarketingsucks.com about Granger Community Church, and a campaign they ran recently called "Pure Sex". It was a series they did with topics like...

The Greatest Sex you'll ever have... The Language of Lust... What happens in Vegas WON'T stay in Vegas!

They created quite a stir in their community by putting this billboard up in town with naked feet showing! GASP! Are Christian allowed to be naked? Aren't we all supposed to Tobias Funke esc. never-nudes?

It simply advertised a link to a website called mylamesexlife.com. Check out the link... it's AMAZING!

It's so hard to believe that Christians are still outraged by talking about sex. Check this quote out:

"Instead of using scripture, he's using fads," said Gene Koessel, 70, a retired Lutheran pastor from Roseville, "What's next?"

What's next? Talking about Healing? Money? Orgasms? Note to Gene. Sex is not a fad. It may even be older then you and your stuck up, starch stiff, emotionally repressed gang of freedom-stifling cronies. I'm telling you something. Sex needs to be redeemed. And if it takes shaking down a few "Gene's" to get it back... well billboard me up Sally.

Not to mention... wouldn't (as a heathen... WINK WINK) you be more likely to go to that website than one that tells your you're damned while driving through the Amish Country. Do the Amish use websites?

My Voiceover Agency

Check out my Voice over Agency... I've been with Vox talent for a few years now and I'm very happy with the professional way that they handle their business. If you're looking for EXCELLENT voice work for your project, ad, church, corporate video... or for your own dark disturbing private purposes... check them out. There are even more wonderful voice actors than me... but... um... hire me.

"Jesus gave us a new van"

This is what my kids say about our vehicles. It's what we tell them... because it's the truth. A few weeks after our "vehicular breakthrough"/ car accident. Friday we welcomed a 1999 Ford Windstar to the fam. The insurance money we received from "AstroBoy" being written off totally covered this new/used van.

The day in the photograph on the right, was our Missionary Commissioning Ceremony on our second-to-last day in Ghana back in the winter of 2000. That day I made a vow to God. Biblically, I suppose they're called covenants. This is the deal I made with God..

If you always take care of my family and provide for their every need, I'll live a life that challenges people view of how BIG you are.

It's extremely fun on a daily basis to see how both of those things manifest themselves. Because God simply does not fail. Because he's God.
