That Strippers and Bums BBQ

For some time now, I've spent my Friday night's hanging out on the streets of Downtown Brantford until the wee hours. We call it "Flippin' Fridays" but we've just recently found out that the BBQ's street name has become "That Strippers and Bums Barbecue".

Now... this name is quite apropos as the Barbecue is frequented by strippers and bums, (with the odd hooker and pimp thrown in for good measure!) It's an ironic ministry actually as it's run by a group of people whose Compassion level register's slightly below that of an amoeba.

We have no interest in merely meeting the practical needs of these folks and perpetuating their poverty cycle. Instead, we use each Hamburger as a tool to influence. It's meeting the "felt needs" of the neighborhood in order to meet what we all know is their "real need"... Jesus and a way out.

After a year of doing this Barbecue, WE'VE gotten past the dirt and grime and THEY'VE let their guard down enough to talk with us about the ins and outs of the corrupted cycle they've found themselves caught in. These people are REAL HUMANS with real everyday issues... like YOU. But when you're caught in this world, it makes getting free from it's grip hard because people stop looking AT you and begin looking right THROUGH you as if you aren't even there. You become less "person" and more "issue". That's a tough place to be in!

In Luke 10: 30-37, Jesus told the story of a good Samaritan that stopped and helped a beaten down Levite. Even though these guys came from different worlds... he had mercy on him and treated him like he was worth something. Why? Because He WAS somebody. Somebody who needed someone to offer him a helping hand up.

But you only get to be that person when (not unlike at a railroad crossing), stop, look and listen.

Interesting Pot Pouri of Link Goodness

Found a wonderful interview-style article on Christianity Today about (one of my favorite subjects)... Sex and Spirituality. It's writen by 4 Christian Sex Therapists and is a great mind blow about what Sex is all about. I don't think we in North America can learn enough about this topic after being BOMBARDED day after day by Sex depicted the wrong way.

You really must "Simpsonize" yourself at Simpsonizeme.com. That's me... with the Big Ear there. Shocked? I am.

Check out this story about the Salvation of Korn's former lead guitar player! God is simply awesome at what he does. Top of the heap even.

I did stand up at a Young Adult Festival a couple of weeks ago and the band "Hewit" closed off the night. The lead singer Joel Auge has this absolutely fantastic voice! Really Really something else. Trickle-Down Influence

If you've been in the church for enough years, you've likely heard Pastors say the same things over, and over, and over, and over. Like...

"Let's get together for lunch". Which really means...
"There's something wrong I have to address"

"You could get hit by a bus today".
Which really means...
"Get saved Dummy"

"I'm not trying to lay a heavy on you."

Which really means...
"I'm too old to use the latest slang"

Many times, Pastors with try to get you "involved in your community". I don't know about you, but the first thing that pops into my head is the coming suggestion of, "let's do a car wash", or "we'll pick up trash and sing hymns to the elderly!". But this is not the only way to serve your community. Check this story out in Luke 5: 27-32

27After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. "Follow me," Jesus said to him, 28and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.

29Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. 30But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and 'sinners'?"

31Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

What I like about this story is that Jesus is "influencing the influencer". He may not have been a WELL LIKED member of the community, but people knew him. When Levi was impacted by the love of God... MANY others were too.

There is a theory of Economics called "Trickle Down Economics". The theory is that you take care of the companies, businesses and organizations at the top and they will (in theory) take care of those in need. This theory doesn't always work because we're dealing with selfish people in the Economic context.

When you're dealing with Jesus and the light of Salvation... it works different. When the leader changes, so do those who follow If the mayor got saved and filled with the Holy Spirit... what would happen? This is why you should pray for your community leaders. Serve those in authority. "Influence the Influencer's".

In his song "Slip Slidin' Away" Paul Simon wrote:

"God only knows, God makes his plan
The information's unavailable to the mortal man
Were workin our jobs, collect our pay
Believe were gliding down the highway, when in fact were slip sliding away"
Poetic, but also proof that just because something rhymes doesn't make it so.
In John 14: 25-26, Jesus said:
"I'm telling you these things while I'm still living with you. The Friend, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send at my request, will make everything plain to you. He will remind you of all the things I have told you."
It's quite clear that Jesus came to set up the world for the times we're living in today. His life was not JUST the culmination of God's "Old Testament Desert-Strollin' Journeying Days." His death was the launching pad into OUR world. From that point to this... the rules have changed.

The Holy Spirit is alive and speaking! Jesus didn't just say... "read the book". He said...
Listen to the Holy Spirit and He'll take you where you need to go...
Teach you what you need to learn...
Reveal to your spirits what you still don't get...

Think about everything that The Holy Spirit taught John on the island of Patmos. There were a whole lot of eyeballs on a whole lot of winged creatures that Jesus didn't talk about. He talked mostly about seeds. Creatures with eyeballs... not as much.

Paul Simon was correct that God knows and makes His plans... but VERY incorrect in how this concept plays out.

We're to be "in the know". God WANTS us to be in the loop. Do you want to be in the "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says" club?

Picture of Jesus

Ben Harper from all accounts seems to be a just a good, honest, hippy who sings about what he believes to be truth.

I am IMPRESSED with this next up and coming Generation. They are really good people.
They are people who easily and simply live what my Generation X wanted but didn't find in our societal disillusionment.

I like HOW they like.
They ARE going to change our world
It IS going to look different than the church is comfortable with.
But squash them... and it's YOUR bad.

Check out this long but absolutely amazing vision about an army of young people from the Book "Red Moon Rising"

"The vision is JESUS – obsessively, dangerously, undeniably Jesus.

The vision is an army of young people.

You see bones? I see an army. And they are FREE from materialism.

They laugh at 9-5 little prisons.
They could eat caviar on Monday and crusts on Tuesday.
They wouldn't even notice.
They know the meaning of the Matrix, the way the west was won.
They are mobile like the wind, they belong to the nations. They need no passport.. People write their addresses in pencil and wonder at their strange existence.
They are free yet they are slaves of the hurting and dirty and dying.
What is the vision ?
The vision is holiness that hurts the eyes. It makes children laugh and adults angry. It gave up the game of minimum integrity long ago to reach for the stars. It scorns the good and strains for the best. It is dangerously pure.

Light flickers from every secret motive, every private conversation.
It loves people away from their suicide leaps, their Satan games.
This is an army that will lay down its life for the cause.
A million times a day its soldiers

choose to loose
that they might one day win
the great 'Well done' of faithful sons and daughters.

Such heroes are as radical on Monday morning as Sunday night. They don't need fame from names. Instead they grin quietly upwards and hear the crowds chanting again and again: "COME ON!"

And this is the sound of the underground
The whisper of history in the making
Foundations shaking
Revolutionaries dreaming once again
Mystery is scheming in whispers
Conspiracy is breathing…
This is the sound of the underground

And the army is discipl(in)ed.

Young people who beat their bodies into submission.

Every soldier would take a bullet for his comrade at arms.
The tattoo on their back boasts "for me to live is Christ and to die is gain".

Sacrifice fuels the fire of victory in their upward eyes. Winners. Martyrs. Who can stop them ?
Can hormones hold them back?
Can failure succeed? Can fear scare them or death kill them ?

And the generation prays

like a dying man
with groans beyond talking,
with warrior cries, sulphuric tears and
with great barrow loads of laughter!
Waiting. Watching: 24 – 7 – 365.

Whatever it takes they will give: Breaking the rules. Shaking mediocrity from its cosy little hide. Laying down their rights and their precious little wrongs, laughing at labels, fasting essentials. The advertisers cannot mould them. Hollywood cannot hold them. Peer-pressure is powerless to shake their resolve at late night parties before the cockerel cries.

They are incredibly cool, dangerously attractive

On the outside? They hardly care. They wear clothes like costumes to communicate and celebrate but never to hide.
Would they surrender their image or their popularity?
They would lay down their very lives - swap seats with the man on death row - guilty as hell. A throne for an electric chair.

With blood and sweat and many tears, with sleepless nights and fruitless days,

they pray as if it all depends on God and live as if it all depends on them.

Their DNA chooses JESUS. (He breathes out, they breathe in.)
Their subconscious sings. They had a blood transfusion with Jesus.
Their words make demons scream in shopping centers.
Don't you hear them coming?
Herald the weirdo's! Summon the losers and the freaks. Here come the frightened and forgotten with fire in their eyes. They walk tall and trees applaud, skyscrapers bow, mountains are dwarfed by these children of another dimension. Their prayers summon the hounds of heaven and invoke the ancient dream of Eden.

And this vision will be. It will come to pass; it will come easily; it will come soon. How do I know? This is the longing of creation itself, the groaning of the Spirit, the very dream of God. My tomorrow is his today. My distant hope is his 3D. And my feeble, whispered, faithless prayer invokes a thunderous, resounding, bone-shaking great 'Amen!' from countless angels, from hero's of the faith, from Christ himself. And he is the original dreamer, the ultimate winner."

I'm going to spend some time pouring through this a bit. As a leader, you have to very much be aware of WHO it is you're leading. It's easy to take where God's taken you... then let it be a stifling blanket over those who have their own destinies that look different from your own.

The Place I wanna be

You know, I'm blessed enough to have a very interesting life. I know many interesting people who do very interesting things. I have interesting passions that lead to interesting times!

Later tonight, I'm driving 2.5 hours to do stand-up at a young adult conference in the woods! I just got home from cooking burgers for hookers, strippers and bums!

But these are the people who mean the most to me...

These are the moments that will stay with me.

I am a proud family man. I'm building a Godly heritage for them. And there is nowhere more satisfying to be than with them. THE END

Thank you "The Tallest Man in the World"

Yesterday, Big Ear Creation MAY have experienced a FEW more visits than normal!

Ya Think? 475 Visits!

I couldn't figure it out until I heard that yesterday, this guy...

The Tallest Man in the World got married. Quite some time ago I wrote a blog entry about him and that apparently sparked the Big Ear Barrage.

What an interesting world that the marriage of a large, gangly, Mongolian sheep herder... could personally benefit the writings of a large eared, Christian smack-talkin', bozo like me.

I'm not the kind of guy to cry "you paved paradise a put up a parking lot"??? I'm sometimes more inspired by the people who make parking lots! What a business! I paid 10 bucks to park outside of the Rogers Center on Saturday. That's a pretty big profit for pavement.

But we surely do live in a world that thinks awkwardly about what we do. Short sighted consumerism. Now...I shop at Walmart because it's the only place in town to buy underwear frankly.

We continue to pave, pollute, struggle, wrangle, fight, grapple for temporary delights. Passing fancies that end with bare cupboards and decaying urban wastelands.

I'm quite pro-industry. But there must a shift in the consumer cookie-monster mindset of win it all at all cost.

One of the reason's I like some of these social networking type things is the exact reason why other's hate them. It's expository. It's revealing. It's accountability.

Blogs... Facebooking... online photography... even Goggling! You're throwing your life into the world of the "who-knows-where", for the "who-knows-who" to pick apart. It can be a bit of the standing in front of the crowd in your underpants feeling.

But many times, things that I've read, looked at, followed in other's lives have inspired me to altar my method of thinking for the better. Challenged me to be a better person.

1) Accountability for my actions. You can't "tag" me in a picture doing something that I'm ashamed of... because I'm not doing anything that I'm hiding!

2) Testimony. I desire to live an exposed life that points toward Jesus. So by exposing my life to others... God's name SHOULD be lifted high.

I've just joined a photo group on Flickr called "365 Days", where people take a self portrait of some kind every day. I'm on Day 5... we'll see how long I can stick with it, but again... cataloging my movements over the course of the year should be quite fascinating to see what life really looks like! Good... Bad... and Ugly. Because THAT is real life and we all live it.

Follow along... let me know if you do!

Day 2
Day 3

Day 4Day 5

I really believe that when you "Expose" yourself to others, you...

1) Have nowhere left to hide
2) Nothing left to hide from

It's quite freeing actually

Honky Tonk Dave

Country music is creepily becoming a style of music that is tells the tale of my life and the values of my home. How in the world did this happen?

I'll tell you what though. As much as I'm a future dreamer. As much as I'm a world-sized thinker. As much as I love being in the presence of a BIG BIG God...

I'm also a guy who can revel in the "I've got a smile on my face and I've got four walls around me". Without having "that guy", I'd loose me.

Welcome to Intercourse

For the life of me... I cannot understand why sex is so difficult for Christians to talk about. It's a tragedy really.

There is a new book out called , "Forbidden Fruit: Sex & Religion in the Lives of American Teenagers"

Statistically; it says that 80% of American Evangelicals think that sex should be saved for marriage. Yet...they are just as likely (if not more so) to have sex before marriage!

Other sex and marriage related stats like divorce rate, homosexuality, adultery, etc... are virtually the same in the church as they are in the world. So it stands to reason that Christians think lots about sex too! I do.

Sex statistics from The Kinney Institute say that men think about sex every 52 seconds !
That's a lot of sex thinking for God hungry, born again, spirit filled , unashamed Christians!
It's an awesome, God-ordained, exciting, connecting, Covenantal part of Christian life that deserves to be spoken of, taught about, and spirit-led!

The reason why schools began to teach their students about sex, is simply because the parents were endangering their kids by leaving them in the dark about the bits and pieces. NOW... Christians are leaving EACH OTHER in the dark by not delving deeper into this well laid out world prepared for us by our King.

You're more likely to think about sex than God, yet in Christendom, we pretend this world doesn't exist... leaving those "hungry" for something deeper to find their answers in a secular world that speaks about it at will. Why? Because people are searching from something deeper in every area of life.

Without the Holy Spirit, sex can be a grand ole' letdown because it's discluded its designer from the equation.

It's not just a "don't do it if you're not married", beginning and end. Once you're ready to light that fire, new cans of worms are opened up. It's a journey, like prayer is a journey that you learn more about as you dig.

It's only an uncomfortable topic because we're not used to thinking that it's OK to speak of in dignified company. This generation of Revolutionary Young Adults don't care about old religious thoughts and hangups. The rest of the church should take note.

There will be great fruit that comes out of this. Learning about it is an investment in your marriage.

I'm so much Bigger

I'm so much bigger that your mind can scarcely think of me.
I'm so much smaller that your eye can barely wink at me.

I'm so much bigger that your lips can't fully talk with me.
I'm so much smaller that your heart must blindly walk with me.

I'm so much bigger that your walls can never ransom me.
I'm so much smaller that your halls must do their dance for me.

I'm so much bigger that your chorus doesn't capture me.
I'm so much smaller that your rhythm must enrapture me.

I'm so much bigger that your hills are bound and yoked by me.
I'm so much smaller that your valleys are drenched and soaked by me.

I'm so much bigger that your groans are brought alive by me.
I'm so much smaller that your whispers all survive in me.

I'm so much bigger that light is merely prose to me.
I'm so much smaller that the darkness is exposed by me.

I'm so much bigger that the breadth will not talk back to me.
I'm so much smaller that the nooks are not too black for me.

I'm so much bigger that I push until there's space for me.
I'm so much smaller that I go to prepare a place for thee.

Glorious and Free

In the movie Braveheart... this man

said this...

"You're so concerned with squabbling for the scraps from Longshanks' table that you've missed your God-given right to something better."

To his people about this man...

Whether those were his real words or not, it was the principle that he communicated to the Scottish people, inspiring them to fight for their freedom. They fought. They won. History tells the tale.

I think of this quote at gatherings that are filled with niceties instead of legitimate relationship. Hanging on to the past clouds the ability for a fruitful now and furthermore.

I think of it when I see the church restricting God's burning desire for movement in the name of comfort and class.

I think of it when style is consumed over substance.

I think of it when laws are passed that cater to the whims of the day... flying in the face of ancient principles of truth

But you have to CHOOSE to FIGHT for THE BEST. Without fighting, we're choosing this...

over this...

It's enough to get by, but not THE BEST

Tell me... where do see scraps being gobbled like they're steak?
