When simply "being positive" isn't the right move

Sunday morning at Freedom House... McLeans and it's brand new Brantford Tourism Center slogan idea "The Most Dangerous City in Ontario" was THE topic of discussion.

At least we're not Regina. Danger Bay over there. Tisk Tisk Tisk.
Dirty Prairie Dogs.

Today the Expositor... bless their little hearts... published an article called

'I've always felt safe here'; Residents don't buy magazine story that Brantford is Ontario's most dangerous city.

Well meaning but ridiculous tripe. Grey skies are going to clear up, put on a happy face. Again... I don't feel threatened in Brantford and dig living in this city... but it would be a horrible mistake to simply point out how nice our flower beds are and pretend that we don't see what objective eyes do.

This an annoymous commenter on this blog a couple of days ago:

This is the story right now. Warts and all. Another friend of mine who returned briefly to Brantford a while back, following the release of this story told me of another friend who was raped twice in high school (AS an affluent person... BY affluent people).

It's more than just a downtown issue.

The WRONG move would be to try and gloss over reality under the ospice of "being positive". Then all of a sudden we're Mark McGwire sitting in front of congress saying, "I'm not here to talk about the past" while the sport he loves burns in the here and now. The RIGHT move is to cut the crap and admit it. It's the basic 12 step program here fellas.

This is how AA deals with it...

  1. Admit we have a problem
  2. Believe that a Power greater than ourselves can restore us.
  3. Turn our will and our lives over to God.
  4. Take a fearless moral inventory.
  5. Admit to God, to ourselves, and to others our wrongs.
  6. Be ready to have God remove our defects.
  7. Humbly ask Him to remove our shortcomings.
  8. List of all people we've harmed, and be willing to make amends to them all.
  9. Make direct amends.
  10. Continue to take personal inventory and promptly admit it.
  11. Through prayer improve our contact with God, praying for knowledge of His Will and the power to carry that out.
  12. Have a spiritual awakening and to practice these principles.

You can't tell me that a plan of apologizing those we've hurt, taking stock of our priorities, and praying for the BEST direction to succeed wouldn't Revolutionize the moral fabric of Brantford?

What was said about this story at Freedom House this Sunday? We sang songs like...

Let God arise
Let God arise
Our God reigns now and forever
He reigns now and forever

His enemies will run for sure
The church will stand, she will endure
He holds the keys of life, our Lord
Death has no sting, no final word

... and declared LIFE instead of DEATH over Brantford.

Even though it's tough since for many years, we've been calling Brantford "The City of God" in faith... we're actually relatively excited about this whole thing. Because this will serve as a wonderful follow-up story for McLeans one day, when Brantford becomes the jewel it was intended to be.

That to me IS positive thinking.
