Only the ends of the earth?

"We live in an amazing amazing world and it's wasted on the crappiest generation of just spoiled idiots that don't care"
Louis CK

You've got to check out this fantastic 4 minutes from comedian Louis CK on Conan O'Brien. It's more than a "In my day we walked 5 miles in the snow" bit. I think it hits on a very important issue... and it's darn funny too.

This subtly venomous attitude that he masterfully communicated is a step up from being unthankful. I think it's even a step up from selfishness. The loss of awe can rot and stunt you. It's the antithesis of the "Boomdiada... isn't the world amazing" concept that both inspires us upward and humbles us to our knees in reverence.

Every time I use Skype, I feel like I'm on the Jetsons. 5 years ago (in the technological dark ages) I chatted with Krissy on MSN while I was at an Internet cafe on an island in the South China Sea overlooking a coral reef... while she sat at our desk in Brantford. I almost couldn't believe it was happening.

The times we live in, are COMPLETELY unlike any other time in history. We really should stop and recognize the significance more often. Think a bit bigger. We can be anywhere within a day or talk to anyone instantly. Before Jesus was taken to heaven in Acts 1:9, He said in verse 8:

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

And a stunned small group were left with an impossibly daunting task and a mandate that assured them that their net mending days were pretty much done. "Only the end of the earth? We should have that taken care of by Wednesday afternoon... just in time for our midweek programs!"

But they were passionate people who believed in the spirit behind Pete Greig's "The Vision" words, "My distant hope is His 3D"

Fast forward if you will. These are the days that without really even using faith, we could easily strategize how His mobile army of millions could infiltrate "the ends of the earth". It's not really a stretch. We've got the tools, the maps, and the numbers. We even know how the story ends.

So you'd think we'd be up and at it. But since it's our "normal", without intentional submission and chosen reliance on what isn't seen (faith) it's VERY easy to miss the unique mantle that has been given to our generation. On our own we quickly slip into using God's tools of war as playthings... because of a lack of awe and reverence.

I don't want this generation to be known as "the crappiest generation of just spoiled idiots that don't care".

Louis CK is right that we live in an amazing world.
What will you do with your freedom?
